Quebec | Two people arrested in connection with “grandson fraud”

(Quebec) Quebec police arrested a 20-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man in connection with cases of “grandson fraud”.

The Quebec City Police Department warned the population Thursday that there was an increase in these cases, where suspects demand money from victims by pretending to be a loved one, or a person of authority, such as a police officer or a lawyer.

The same day, the police arrested the two suspects for fraud of more than $5,000 and failure to comply with an undertaking.

The woman and man were questioned and are expected to appear in court on Friday. Police seized two cell phones and a vehicle.

According to police, the suspects took more than $34,000 from the victims and their case is linked to other cases of fraud in Quebec. Police are trying to verify if there could be a link with other cases in Quebec and Lévis.

Lévis police launched an appeal to the public on Thursday concerning a man suspected of fraud against seniors, already for more than $100,000, and who could have caused other victims elsewhere in the province.

Éric Desjardins, aged 56, was arrested on December 21. He appeared for the first time the next day, at the Quebec courthouse, for fraud of more than $5,000 targeting four elderly people from Lévis, taking a total of around $100,000 from them.
