Quebec | Two arrests after baby dies at daycare

(Quebec) Quebec police arrested a man and a woman after the death of a 14-month-old baby last Thursday in a Quebec daycare.

The police intervened that day in a family daycare on Sainte-Thérèse Avenue, in the Beauport sector. “The police and paramedics carried out resuscitation maneuvers and escorted the child to the hospital center. Unfortunately, the toddler died a few hours later,” indicates the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ).

The SPVQ announced Tuesday that it had arrested a 30-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman following the tragedy. Guenuite Kiwangala Mubwaka was accused of assault against the baby between November 21, 2023 and March 20, 2024. She is also accused of breach of promise since she had to stay in the judicial district of Quebec. She was arrested in Montreal. Josaphat Mayuba Ndele was only accused of breach of promise.

“More charges are to come,” said the Crown prosecutor at the end of the day Tuesday, during the appearance of the two accused at the Quebec courthouse. The prosecution opposed their release. The next appearance will take place on Thursday.

Police did not say whether the two suspects operated the daycare. However, everything indicates that this is the case. Mr. Ndele is in fact the owner of the Beauport semi-detached where the daycare was located.

Guylaine Giguère, director of the Alliance of the Beauport family childcare coordinating office, indicated Tuesday that the family environment in question had been suspended. She did not want to make any further comments at this time.
