In its State of the labor market in Quebec in 2021, the Quebec Statistical Institute reveals that the number of immigrants in employment in Quebec amounted to 818,700. This is “a peak since the first year that data on immigration status is available (2006)”.

They were thus 88,000 more employed than in 2020.

When we take a step back and look over 10 years, their progress on the labor market in Quebec is even more impressive.

In 10 years, from 2011 to 2021, their employment has increased by 327,000, while it has decreased by 72,000 among non-immigrants, underlined in an interview Luc Cloutier-Villeneuve, analyst in labor statistics at the ISQ.

“You see that the labor market, its growth is really due to the migratory contribution. And in 2021, it’s going in the same direction as in previous years, ”noted Mr. Cloutier-Villeneuve.

During this 10-year period, the share of immigrants in total employment has increased, from 12.4% in 2011 to 19.2% in 2021. Therefore, “almost 1 in 5 jobs in the labor market , is currently occupied by an immigrant,” the labor statistics analyst pointed out.

Another interesting fact: even the most recent immigrants, those who arrived less than five years ago, benefited from this employment growth. Traditionally, it took them longer to integrate into the labor market.

“Growth is happening in all groups, but it is particularly strong in those under five (who arrived here less than five years ago) and five to 10 years old,” said Mr. Cloutier-Villeneuve. In their case, employment growth is 20%.
