Québec solidaire (QS) promises to oppose Bill 24 raising the salaries of MPs by all means.
This was declared in a press briefing on Tuesday by the parliamentary leader of QS, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois. According to him, it is unthinkable that elected officials pay themselves a 30% salary increase.
Under the bill tabled on May 11 by government House leader Simon Jolin-Barrette, the base salary of elected officials would increase from $101,561 to $131,766.
Prime Minister François Legault defended this measure, saying it was a necessary “catch-up” and that his government was showing “courage”.
The Liberals have made it known that they support the bill, while the Parti Québécois is undecided and QS is strongly opposed. Moreover, Mr. Nadeau-Dubois believes that it is not too late for the parties to back down.
“We are going to fight democratically within the tools that are those of Parliament until the last minute of the session to convince the other parties of that,” he said.
“We will continue to work very hard and we will take all the means at our disposal to ensure that this increase does not pass,” he added.
