Québec solidaire activists will elect a new permanent spokesperson on November 17

Activists from Québec solidaire (QS) will elect a new permanent spokesperson on November 17, almost a year to the day after the arrival of Émilise Lessard-Therrien in the same position.

The members of the party meeting in national council in Jonquière on Saturday chose to reject a proposal to suspend the regulations which would have allowed them to express themselves on two options for presidential races. They therefore accepted de facto that Émilise Lessard-Therrien’s successor be chosen at the next congress of the political party.

This must take place virtually from November 15 to 17. The new spokesperson would be chosen on the last day of the activist body.

Since the departure as spokesperson for Émilise Lessard-Therrien, it is the MP for Sherbrooke, Christine Labrie, who has taken over as interim at QS. At the time of being appointed, she had also stated that the organization’s wish was to “replace Émilise […] fast enough “.

However, in the last few days, the solidarity members were presented with a second option. This provided for a vote in spring 2025.

The last race for co-spokesperson of QS concluded, last November, with the election at the last minute of Mr.me Lessard-Therrien in front of MPs Ruba Ghazal and Christine Labrie. The former elected representative of Rouyn-Noranda — Témiscamingue then obtained three more votes than her closest rival, Ms.me Ghazal.

Officially lasting three months, this race was in fact spread over five months, starting from the last national council of Manon Massé as spokesperson. Citing organizational issues and her inability to assert herself at the head of the party, Émilise Lessard-Therrien left her post on April 29.
