Quebec ready to offer $ 12,000 to teachers who postpone their retirement

The government of Quebec announces on Wednesday an improvement in its monetary offers in education and health in the hope of concluding with the unions a renewal of the collective agreements of the public and parapublic sectors.

The President of the Conseil du trésor, Sonia LeBel, specified that in education, her government is putting on the table a lump sum of $12,000 which will be offered to teachers eligible for retirement without reduction who will accept, on a voluntary basis, remain full-time in 2023-2024. The government estimates that nearly 7,000 teachers would be eligible for this offer over the next school year.

Moreover, the government indicates that sums of $143 million will make it possible to renew, until the end of the summer, the bonuses offered to health and social services resources. In addition, bonuses in the public service are renewed for the same period.

Minister LeBel points out that these measures are in addition to those contained in the initial offer of a 9% salary increase over five years and the central offers of 11% to 17% made last March to more than 280,000 employees, i.e. nearly half of the workforce in the public and parapublic sectors, all of which are maintained in their entirety.

The President of the Conseil du trésor wants to intensify the work at the sectoral tables. She specifies that the approach of the summer holidays cannot constitute an excuse for a slackening in the discussions since critical moments are approaching.

Intensive negotiations on the organization of work will therefore take place from mid-May until the end of the summer.
