All the Quebec police officers suspended in the wake of the brutal altercations relayed on social networks in November are preparing to return to service on Sunday.
Three officers from the Quebec City police service (SPVQ) had returned to the patrol shortly before Christmas. As for the last two officers involved in these altercations, the professional standards module determined that they were fit to return to service.
The SPVQ’s internal investigation is coming to an end, but others remain open. “We recall, however, that the disciplinary investigations, the Ethics Commissioner’s investigation, as well as the criminal investigation by the Independent Investigation Bureau [BEI] are still running their course,” the police department said in a statement. “We must await the conclusion of these before applying, if necessary, disciplinary measures. »
The police officer who is the subject of the BEI’s criminal investigation for the violence used during an altercation that took place in a licensed establishment in the Saint-Roch district “will be assigned to administrative tasks”, explains the SPVQ. “As for the other policeman, he will be back in his regular role. »
The statement offers a succinct explanation to justify the return of the officers under investigation. “The management of the Police Department wanted the police officers to offer a service to lend a hand to the organization in the accomplishment of its primary mission, which is to ensure the safety of the citizens of the agglomeration of Quebec,” says the SPVQ, explaining that ongoing investigations may “take some time.”
