Quebec para-swimmer Aurélie Rivard wins bronze in 50m freestyle

Canadian para-swimmer Aurélie Rivard won the bronze medal in the women’s 50-metre freestyle event at the Paris Paralympic Games on Thursday.

Rivard covered the distance in 27.62 seconds at the Paris La Défense arena for his 11e Paralympic medal in career.

China’s Chen Yi won gold in a record time of 27.10 seconds. American Christie Raleigh Crossley was second in 27.38 seconds.

Rivard, who was born with an underdeveloped hand, set the previous world record of 27.37 seconds at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.

The 28-year-old athlete, originally from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, is expected to compete in the 100-metre freestyle, 400-metre freestyle and 100-metre backstroke later in the competition.
