Quebec is still moving away from its greenhouse gas emissions targets

Quebec is still moving backwards in achieving its climate objectives. Greenhouse gas emissions fell by 1.5% in 2019, Minister Benoit Charette confirmed on Wednesday.

“The news is not good,” said the elected Caquist, who presented the most recent report on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in Quebec. Last year, this document reported a 6% reduction between 1990 levels and 2018 levels.

At the end of November, Mr. Charette had agreed that it would be difficult to meet the current objectives. “We are keeping our target, but it will already be a colossal challenge to achieve,” he told reporters.

The Coalition d’avenir Québec is committed to having reduced Québec’s GHGs by 37.5% in 2030 compared to 1990 levels. In recent weeks, both the Liberal Party, Québec solidaire and the Parti Québécois have raised their climate targets.

Further details will follow.
