Quebec invests $50 million to counter elder abuse

As part of the launch of the Action Plan to Counter Elder Abuse, the Minister responsible for Seniors and Caregivers, Marguerite Blais, announced on Sunday an investment of $50 million until 2027.

“There is still a long way to go so that the population is more vigilant”, concerning the mistreatment of the elderly, declared the minister at a press conference. The plan includes 56 measures, including the training of a “champion” in each CHSLD in Quebec. According to Ms. Blais, this person will be “intensively trained” in order to be able to refer his colleagues “to the right stakeholders” in a situation of abuse.

The plan also provides for the standardization of the practices of the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions with regard to mistreatment of older adults as well as the funding of “well-treatment” projects, in particular by funding community organizations.

Further details will follow.
