The self-service electric scooter rental pilot project will be extended for two years by the Quebec government, which will allow interested cities to deploy these two-wheeled vehicles on their territory until July 2024.
The renewal of this pilot project was quietly announced in the Gazette officielle du Québec this week.
Changes have been made to the new version of the program to facilitate the deployment of scooter fleets. For example, operators will no longer be required to provide in-person training to users of electric scooters.
However, electric scooter companies will have to continue to offer users training through a mobile application that includes information on how to ride an electric scooter safely as well as related traffic rules. with this type of vehicle.
The new provisions of the pilot project will come into force on the fifteenth day following the date of publication of the decree, i.e. June 30, 2022.
The pilot project still leaves it up to local officials to determine the technical details, in particular whether or not an anchor point is required for these motorized vehicles.
“Mobility is a priority for our administration and we are open to evaluating scooters with anchors in Montreal. We will carefully follow the pilot project carried out by the Government of Quebec, ”commented in writing the cabinet of the mayoress Valérie Plante.
In 2019, the province’s only trial year drew a lot of criticism. In Montreal, the administration had put an end to the initiative citing that only 20% of scooters had been parked in reserved areas and that the police had given more than 300 tickets.
The opposition to the city council urged the administration in place to mandate BIXI to manage the return of electric scooters to Montreal. This motion was defeated.
