Quebec definitively renounces the extraction of hydrocarbons on its territory

To achieve its carbon neutrality objectives, Quebec can no longer afford to allocate the exploitation of hydrocarbons on its territory, according to Premier François Legault. His government “gave it up”, he confirmed on Tuesday.

“Quebec can play its role in the fight against climate change,” said Mr. Legault in his opening speech to the National Assembly on Tuesday.

But to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, Quebec must say no to natural gas and oil extraction projects, he continued.

Quebec had been studying this scenario for a while. In recent weeks, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonatan Julien, had argued that several avenues were on the table.

Further details will follow.
