Quebec creates a committee to look into work-related oncological diseases

(Montreal) Quebec creates a committee to look into work-related oncological diseases.

The work of the Committee on Occupational Oncological Diseases should begin in the fall, Labor Minister Jean Boulet announced on Friday.

The mandate of this committee will be to determine whether a worker is suffering from an occupational oncological disease. To do this, it must report its findings regarding the worker’s functional limitations, the damage to his physical integrity and his tolerance to a contaminant.

The committee will also have to give its opinion on the link between the occupational disease and the risks linked to work and the tasks carried out by the worker.

Minister Boulet stressed that the creation of this committee “will play a significant role in determining the causal relationship between work and the development of cancer and, as a result, in establishing eligibility for compensation for an occupational disease.”

“This represents an important step in expanding access to compensation for occupational diseases, particularly with regard to the increase in the number of cancers developed among firefighters,” added the minister.
