The citizens of the capital therefore seem to have chosen continuity by electing the former right-hand man of the outgoing mayor, who ruled without question for 14 years at the town hall.

With nearly two-thirds of the ballot boxes counted, at 9.40 p.m., Mr.me Savard obtained 33.4% of the vote, against 30.3% for Bruno Marchand and 25.2% for Jean-François Gosselin.

The 47-year-old had presented herself as the contender for continuity. In particular, she promised to complete the tramway, the largest infrastructure project in the history of Quebec.

The new mayor will be able to count on a council in her colors. Team Marie-Josée Savard was in the process of having a majority of councilors elected.

The evening had started with apprehension at the Imperial Bell, a downtown performance hall where his team had gathered. It is that Saturday, the Journal of Quebec published a Léger poll which placed Savard and Marchand tied.

At the armory, the guests invited to Bruno Marchand’s rally barely had time to take off their coats that Radio-Canada declared Mr.me Savard winner.
