René Richard Cyr’s first feature film, Our sisters-in-lawhas just passed the $3 million mark at the Quebec box office.
The cinematographic work, adapted from the play by Michel Tremblay, remains the number one Quebec film at the box office since the beginning of 2024. For its part, the comedy 1995, directed by Ricardo Trogi, is doing very well and exceeds 2 million in revenue, after only three weeks on the bill.
The director of Our sisters-in-law knew that Michel Tremblay’s name was a “base” for public success… But he didn’t think he would reach 3 million in five weeks. “We are delighted, because we see that word of mouth works very well,” Cyr explained to The PressMonday afternoon.
There are parents who go back to see the film a second time at the cinema with their teenagers. And mothers who tell us that they will see the film again with their young daughters, because afterwards, they have discussions about the condition of women at the time.

“Girls aged 18 and 20 can’t believe that a woman had to ask her husband’s permission to leave the house!” says the director.
“Breaking the $3 million mark with Our sisters-in-law is a source of great pride for TVA Films. This success demonstrates once again that the Quebec public is attached to its stories, but also that it is ready to celebrate them with enthusiasm,” reacted the distributor’s vice-president, Yann Paquet.
Let us also remember that Our sisters-in-law will be presented in France, at the Angoulême Film Festival, at the end of August, as an international premiere. Actresses Geneviève Schmidt and Véronic DiCaire will accompany the film to the festival, with its producer, Denise Robert.
