Unsurprisingly, the comedy-drama Our sisters-in-law, written and directed by director René Richard Cyr, based on the work of Michel Tremblay, had an excellent first weekend in theaters across Quebec.
According to the firm Cinéac, the film starring Geneviève Schmidt, Anne-Élisabeth Bossé and Véronic DiCaire, among others, has accumulated revenues of just over $480,000 across the province since its release on July 11. The film was shown on 100 screens, for an average of $4,801 per screen.
Our sisters-in-law ranks second in the rankings of Cinéac, an agency that compiles the revenues of films shown on screens in the province. top 10 is dominated by Despicable Me 4, with 573 $951 for the weekend. In its third week on the bill, the Universal blockbuster has grossed over $3 million at the Quebec box office. Note, Our sisters-in-law arrives ahead of Disney’s franchise Inside Out 2 and what’s new Longlegs And Fly Me to the Moon.
Il s’agit du meilleur démarrage pour un film québécois depuis 2019, selon la firme Cinéac, soit depuis la sortie de Menteur, mettant en vedette Louis-José Houde et Antoine Bertrand. Le film, réalisé par Émile Gaudreault, avait accumulé 780 882 $ aux guichets en cinq jours, du 10 au 14 juillet.
« Nous sommes particulièrement ravis de l’engouement suscité par Nos belles-sœurs et de voir que le public, pour qui nous réalisons nos films, en a fait un film évènement », a déclaré dans un communiqué la productrice Denise Robert, de Cinémaginaire.
En octobre dernier, Testament, de Denys Arcand, avait réalisé le meilleur démarrage pour un film québécois depuis la réouverture des salles après la pandémie, avec plus de 406 000 $ au box-office lors de son premier week-end à l’affiche.
« Un film unique »

En s’attelant à l’adaptation du spectacle musical Belles-sœurs, créé en 2010 avec Daniel Bélanger, René Richard Cyr propose sur grand écran un film à « l’esthétique pop où les couleurs acidulées dominent joyeusement. […] “Her sisters-in-law appear in all their splendor, pride and femininity. After all, there is nothing too beautiful for the working class!” wrote colleague Manon Dumais in her review last week.

Furthermore, the film Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage as a serial killer, did well with over $201,000 on 38 screens in Quebec, coming in fourth place in the top 10 from Cinéac. The American horror film, directed by Oz Perkins, has grossed over $22 million in North America.
