Quebec asks Ottawa to close Roxham Road again

Quebec calls on Ottawa to “take responsibility” by immediately closing Roxham Road to regain the upper hand on the rise in COVID-19 cases.

In a tweet posted on Monday on Twitter, the Minister of Immigration, Jean Boulet, formally demanded that the federal government once again ban the passage of refugees at the border between New York State and Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle.

“We must all mobilize in the face of the rise in cases of [COVID-19] so as not to overload our health system! He wrote.

“The federal government must take its responsibilities”, he also indicated.

The Quebec minister will meet today with his federal counterpart, Sean Fraser, confirmed the cabinet of Mr. Boulet.

Roxham Road, the entry point for thousands of asylum seekers each year, has only been reopened for a month. At the time, the federal government lifted a one-and-a-half-year ban on passage, initiated during the first pandemic wave.

Further details will follow.
