Quebec announces a first round of government rate caps to protect citizens from inflation

Finance Minister Eric Girard announced on Wednesday a first round of capping government tariffs to shield them from a sharp rise due to high inflation.

During the election campaign, the Coalition avenir Québec promised that its first bill would serve to mitigate their automatic indexation.

On Wednesday, Mr. Girard said that he is finally proceeding earlier, by regulatory means, for certain costs whose annual adjustment takes place on 1er January.

The regulatory amendment announced Wednesday limits to 3% the increase in the price of driver’s licenses and registration, the contribution paid in residential and long-term care centers (CHSLD) and the contribution for a room private or semi-private in a short-term care hospital.

Without these modifications, the indexation of these prices would have been more than 6%. Capping these government tariffs will deprive state coffers of $331 million.

The filing of a bill will be is still expected in the coming weeks to extend this cap to other government tariffs.

Parliamentary work is due to resume on November 29.
