Quebec announces $4.4 million in aid to the Saint-Laurent Action Fund

Quebec announced financial assistance of $4,480,000 to the Saint-Laurent Action Fund to restore and enhance biodiversity in marine protected areas.

This was announced by Minister of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks Benoit Charette on Tuesday in a press release.

The press release indicates that the funding comes from “the 650 million from the Nature 2030 Plan, which is Quebec’s response to achieving the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.”

The Restoration Program in the marine protected areas of the St. Lawrence will be used in particular for “knowledge transfer projects to raise awareness among certain key partners about the impacts of human activities on coastal and marine natural environments, and in order to equip them, among other things , in the implementation of restoration projects with marine plants”.

Minister Charette wrote that with this program, “our government wishes to carry out concrete restoration actions in marine protected areas in order to improve the state of health of these essential ecosystems.”

He added that “by improving coastal environments, this program will also contribute to regional economic and recreational tourism development” and he “invites interested organizations to participate in large numbers.”

The press release indicates that “the financial assistance granted is available over the next four financial years, i.e. a maximum amount of $2,000,000 for 2023-2024 in order to finance a maximum of projects during the first call for projects, followed by a maximum amount of $620,000 for the fiscal years 2024-2025 to 2027-2028.”
