Quebec and provincial police announce new agreement

(Montreal) The Quebec government and the Association of Provincial Police Officers of Quebec (APPQ) have announced the conclusion of a new agreement in principle for the renewal of the employment contract of Sûreté du Québec (SQ) police officers.

“The agreement would last six years and would notably allow for the promotion and better recognition of the unique status of police officers working within the national police force,” we can read in a press release published Friday afternoon by the APPQ.

The press release also indicates that the details of the agreement will remain “confidential until the members of the APPQ have decided on this settlement hypothesis.”

The 5,700 SQ agents have not had a collective agreement for more than two years.

This expired in March 2022.

Last September, the police rejected by nearly 60% an agreement in principle that had been concluded with the Treasury Board. This agreement provided for salary increases of 21% over five years.

In December, police officers began wearing camouflage pants or jeans during work hours to show their dissatisfaction with negotiations with the government.

On April 2, the APPQ urged the Legault government to speed up talks by the start of the summer period.
