Quebec | A toddler in cardiopulmonary arrest in a daycare center

A toddler of about a year found himself in cardiorespiratory arrest in a daycare center in Quebec City on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a major operation to transport him to the hospital as quickly as possible. An investigation has been opened by the Quebec City Police Department.

At the start of the evening, the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ) had no more information on the child’s state of health.

A call to emergency services was received around 3:45 p.m. concerning a toddler aged approximately one year in cardiopulmonary arrest. He was in a daycare center on rue des Huards, in the Lac-Saint-Charles district of Quebec.

Cardiac resuscitation maneuvers were immediately initiated by the person on the phone, says Sandra Dion, spokesperson for the SPVQ. When they arrived, the police took over the manoeuvres, then the paramedics.

The ambulance was escorted by the police through Quebec City to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. Given the start of the rush hour, streets were even closed, describes Mme Dio.

A person who was in the daycare center was also transported by ambulance for nervous shock.

The parents of the child were located and accompanied themselves to the hospital by the emergency services, in order to avoid a road accident, specifies Mme Dio.

SPVQ investigators met with daycare staff and the baby’s family to try to clarify the circumstances of the tragedy.
