QMJHL | Jacob Mathieu named player of the week

(Boucherville) Rimouski Océanic winger Jacob Mathieu was named player of the week in the QMJHL on Monday.

The 19-year-old from St-Odilon scored five times and added two assists to help the Océanic finish the week with a 2-1-0-0 record. Mathieu first scored two goals, including the equalizer with two and a half minutes left in the game, to propel the Océanic to a 5-4 overtime victory against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Wednesday.

Then, Saturday afternoon, Mathieu hit the target once and collected an assist in a 5-4 home defeat against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, first in the Cecchini circuit standings.

The fourth-year veteran returned to the charge the next day by scoring his team’s first two goals against the Drakkar, giving the Océanic a narrow 3-2 victory.

After missing the first month of the season due to injury, Mathieu quickly hit the ground running with 32 points, including 20 goals, in just 27 games. He had been invited to the Detroit Red Wings training camp in the fall of 2022.

Mathieu succeeds Antonin Verreault, of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, as player of the week in the QMJHL.
