Qimmik | A book by Michel Jean will be adapted for the cinema by Anik Jean

(Montreal) The book Qimmikby journalist and writer Michel Jean, will be adapted for the big screen by director Anik Jean.


This will be the second feature film by Anik Jean, who received three nominations at the Gala Québec Cinéma for his first, My mother’s men. The film was also a popular success with some 1.75 million in box office receipts.

The book Qimmik, a word meaning “dog” in Inuktitut, was published last October. The novel recounts the drama of the sled dog killings in the 1960s, which had a profound impact on the Inuit of the Far North of Quebec.

The film will be produced by PaNik Fiction, a production house co-founded among others by Anik Jean and her husband, Patrick Huard.

In a press release, Michel Jean stressed that the director had demonstrated with her first film a “very great artistic sensitivity”, which is necessary to tell such difficult stories.

He says it is important to tell this story to as many people as possible because, he says, it is part of the history of Quebec.

Anik Jean, for her part, claims to have been “shocked and upset” by the story told in the book.

“It is an honor to finally be able to collaborate with Michel and to put my images at the service of this strong and moving shock novel, which highlights the tragedies, but also the resilience of the people of the Far North,” he said. -she adds.

The feature film will be written by Michel Jean.
