A little 9-year-old boy escaped his grandfather’s vigilance as they returned from hiking in the Pyrenees. Léon was found safe and sound across the border in Spain.
It was after hours of anguish that Léon founduve his father. They hugged each other. Nearly sixty men were mobilized to find the little boy. Léon got lost on January 4. Along the Spanish border, he and his grandfather hiked to the Col de l’Ouillat. This is where the child gets lost due to the fog.
A whistle hanging from his backpack
Very quickly, significant resources were deployed. Léon is found thanks to his composure. “He had the presence of mind to whistle all the way his several kilometers of walking in the forest”, explains Clara Thomas, sub-prefect of Céret (Pyrénées-Orientales). His father recommended that he use this whistle, attached to his backpack. It was a resident of Requesens (Spain) who took him in when he was cold and tired. He will remember this emotional day for a long time, in the heart of the Pyrenees..
