(Puerto Vallarta) Canadian Rebecca Marino beat Mexican Maria Fernanda Navarro Oliva in two sets of 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Puerto Vallarta Open.
Marino had eight aces and won 73.5% of her points on first serve, winning the match in 90 minutes.
Aged 33, Marino also saved two out of three break points in addition to converting four of her five chances.
In the second round of this WTA 125 event, Marino will cross swords with the winner of the duel between Frenchwoman Leolia Jeanjean and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, second seed. That game is scheduled for later Tuesday.
Ranked 146e in the world, Marino is 14-3 in singles this year.
Originally from Vancouver, she just won the ITF W100 tournament in Irapuato, Mexico, on February 11.
