We had to wait until the very end of the draw, but the suspense is over. The two French clubs qualified for the knockout phase of the Champions League have discovered the identity of their respective opponents in the round of 16 Monday, December 13, in Nyon (Switzerland). Lille and Paris have both inherited an English club, Chelsea and Manchester United respectively, and it will not be easy to find their way to the next round.

PSG will find the last team that prevented them from going to the last four of the competition. If the club of the capital remains on a victory (3-1 against the Red Devils in the group stage last year, the last confrontation in the knockout stage left him a bitter and still palpable taste. In March 2019, a tragic outcome had frozen the Parc des Princes (1-3 after the 2-0 first leg) and caused the elimination of Paris from the knockout stages.
But the context has changed a lot since then. Thomas Tuchel and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were left their places on the bench to Mauricio Pochettino and Ralf Rangnick. Above all, the two teams registered a reinforcement of weight this summer, which opened the door to a clash of the Titans. Lionel Messi will find Cristiano Ronaldo in the most prestigious European competition, as was already the case last year in the group stage when the Portuguese played for Juventus and the Argentine for FC Barcelona. But it will be the first time in the knockout phase since the 2011/12 edition, when Barça dismissed Real Madrid before being crowned.
For its part, LOSC has inherited the most feared opponent despite its status as the first in the group. Jocelyn Gourvennec’s players will face defending champion Chelsea. An opponent who did not leave a good memory to the Mastiffs in C1 since they had left the competition anonymously (last in Group H in 2019/20) by losing twice against the Blues (1-2, 1-2). Blues who let slip the first place of their group in added time of the last group game and who were the huge scarecrow of hat 2 of the draw.
