The Parisians had not seized the opportunity to be crowned in front of their public on Saturday evening, they are finally champions of France from their sofa, after the defeat of Monaco in Lyon, Sunday April 28 (3-2), at the occasion of the 31st day of the championship. The Principality club’s setback allows PSG to have a 12-point lead with three days to go, with only nine points left to distribute. This is the twelfth French Ligue 1 champion title in its history, the tenth in the Qatari era.

“Today we won the championship, without a doubt, and this draw gives us the title, I celebrate it like that,” Luis Enrique declared the day before after the draw against Le Havre. If mathematically this statement was false, the future proved the PSG coach right and few people doubted it. To make sure, they had to watch the match between Lyon and Monaco, played early on Sunday evening.

During this twisty game, they must have believed, for the first 20 minutes, that this coronation would still wait. The Monegasques opened the scoring very early thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder (1st), before Alexandre Lacazette equalized (22nd) and Saïd Benrahma gave the Lyonnais the advantage (26th). The ASM captain equalized to give his team hope (60th), but a goal from Malick Fofana gave victory to OL, and the title to the Parisians.

Champions League objective

The Qatari version of PSG is thus titled for the tenth time in twelve seasons. “We are very happy, because it shows the consistency we have had throughout the season”, Warren Zaire-Emery shyly congratulated himself on Saturday evening. A very contained joy since the real objective of the Parisians remains the Champions League, with a semi-final first leg in Dortmund on Wednesday May 1, for which Luis Enrique rotated his squad on Saturday evening, preferring to sacrifice a potential title celebrated in front of the supporters for have a fresher group in the European Cup.

It is therefore freed from the “weight” of winning the championship that the Parisians will travel to Germany on Wednesday. They will only be presented with the French champion trophy on May 12, when they host Toulouse at the Parc des Princes.
