PSG beats Lyon in the final and wins its 15th title for the last of Kylian Mbappé

For the striker’s last match with his club, Paris Saint-Germain dominated OL on Saturday in Lille (2-1). The French international did not score but leaves the capital with a title.

Kylian Mbappé will leave Paris Saint-Germain with one last title. PSG won the Coupe de France on Saturday May 25, dominating Olympique Lyonnais in the final (2-1). The French international did not score in his last match, leaving the light to Ousmane Dembélé and Fabian Ruiz, authors of the two goals for a PSG much superior to OL throughout the match.

Jake O’Brien reduced the gap after returning from the locker room (51st), but Lyon was unable to sufficiently doubt the less sparkling Parisians in the second half. This is the 15th title in the competition for the Parisians, the first since 2021 after the coronations of Nantes and Toulouse over the last two seasons.

Everything seemed to be on track for PSG until the 51st minute. After an explosive start to the match, with several clear chances on each side, the Parisians quickly got their foot on the ball, stifling the Lyonnais who were too quickly overwhelmed by their incursions on the sides.

Ousmane Dembélé (22nd) and Fabian Ruiz (34th), surprisingly alone receiving crosses at the far post, punished the passivity of the Lyon defense in eight minutes.

Returning at the break with 16 shots – including many blocked attempts by Kylian Mbappé – compared to two for Les Gones, the Parisians thought they had done the hard part, as in their last two matches against the Lyonnais, won 4-1 and won from the first period. “We lack mobility, aggression, we have to be able to keep the ball more and above all we have to be able to create big chances when we manage to pass half the field”railed Corentin Tolisso at the microphone of France Télévisions.

His teammate Jake O’Brien heard him, six minutes after returning from the locker room. The Irish giant (1.97 m) boxed a powerful untouchable header for Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 51st minute. Enough to finally wake up the Lyonnais who have once again measured the gap that separates them from PSG despite a real collective commitment. On a similar action on goal, Nicolas Tagliafico could have equalized but the Italian goalkeeper this time pushed his head back onto his line (63rd).

Without really panicking, PSG let the storm pass to regain control of the game. Sure of its strength but not so far from giving in, the capital club ultimately only shook in sequences and could have added to the bill several times, notably by Kylian Mbappé, available and altruistic, but who wasted a lot (a shot on target out of nine attempts), and who only scored one goal in his last five outings before his departure this summer.

For its part, the Parisian club got its hands on a trophy that it had let slip away three times in the last five seasons. For Lyon, the opportunity to complete its redemption with an almost unexpected title – the first since 2012 – will still have to wait.
