The mayor of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Jonathan Lapierre, will be a candidate for the CAQ in the general election this fall.

The Coalition avenir Québec made the announcement on Monday of this leading candidacy in the riding of Îles-de-la-Madeleine.

A native of the Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Jonathan Lapierre was a local municipal councilor from 2005 to 2013, before being elected mayor of the Islands in 2013. He is also president of the Communauté maritime des Îles-de-la-Madeleine. -Madeleine.

He will notably face Joël Arseneau, who is seeking a second term for the Parti Québécois after being narrowly elected in 2018, with 15 votes ahead of the liberal Maryse Lapierre.

The Quebec Liberal Party will be represented this time by the director of the Intra-Quebec Seal Hunters Association and interim director of the Magdalen Islands Coastal Fishermen’s Association, Gil Thériault.

In 2018, Québec solidaire (QS) came third, and the CAQ, fourth.

Former city councillor, owner of a supermarket and president of “Bon Goût frais des Îles”, Jean-Philippe Déraspe, is trying his luck in provincial politics with QS in the riding.
