More than 10,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Malmö, Sweden, on Thursday, May 9, to protest Israel’s participation in Eurovision.

The final phase of Eurovision is currently being held in Malmö (Sweden). Behind the competition sets, Palestinian flags hang from the windows. On the afternoon of Thursday, May 9, more than 10,000 demonstrators gathered at Eurovision Village, where the semi-final is to be broadcast. They contest Israel’s participation in the competition. Faced with this protest, Israeli candidate Eden Golan received the support of Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of the Hebrew state.

Police officers from Sweden, Denmark and Norway as reinforcements

Although the rallies were held peacefully, the tense geopolitical context pushed Sweden to increase its level of vigilance. Police reinforcements came from all over the country, but also from Denmark and Norway. Representatives of certain countries such as Norwegian Magnus Børmark have publicly called for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
