A small group of protesters gathered in Montreal on Saturday night to oppose the curfew. According to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, the event ended with an arrest and the delivery of 57 tickets.
The curfew in effect in Quebec applies from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. A measure that the government of François Legault believes necessary to limit gatherings and slow the progression of the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic fueled by the Omicron variant.
Saturday evening, a few dozen people gathered near the intersection of Sherbrooke and McGill College streets, where the Prime Minister’s office is located in downtown Montreal, to challenge this health directive.
According to the report sent by the spokesperson for the SPVM, Caroline Chèvrefils, a person was arrested for assault committed against a police officer.
She added that 57 tickets were distributed for not respecting the curfew.
According to the information available on the Quebec government portal, “offenders are liable to fines of $ 1,000 to $ 6,000”. In the case of adolescents, “youth 14 years of age and over are liable to a fine of $ 500”.
