More than a week after protests against COVID-19 restrictions began, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has finally declared a state of emergency.
In a brief statement released late Sunday afternoon, the municipality wrote that the decision “reflects the grave danger as well as the threat to the safety and security of residents posed by the continued protests” in the heart of the nation’s capital. She also highlighted her need for help from other levels of government.
Earlier Sunday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province helped city officials do what some called an occupation.
The Ottawa police have received reinforcements, as 250 Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers have joined the ranks of the police.
Local police have warned that anyone trying to deliver petrol or supplies to protesters could be arrested.
