Protection of candidates and their entourages, psychological support… The majority makes ten proposals to fight against violence against elected officials

Renaissance makes ten proposals to complete the plan to combat violence against elected officials presented on May 17 by the government. The presidential party wants to pay particular attention to the entourage of elected officials.

The resigning mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique), Yannick Morez, testified to this. What took his decision was the last altercation on the terrace of a café while he was with his family, the worry of his children, his wife – traumatized – who no longer wanted to stay in the town. “No, it’s not the risk of the job”, recalls Denis Thuriot, mayor of Nevers and president of the assembly of the territories of the Renaissance party, where the elected representatives of the presidential majority sit.

Protect elected officials also in their personal lives

While a demonstration is organized Wednesday, May 24 in Saint-Brevin, to support Yannick Morez and denounce the violence of the far right, Renaissance presents ten proposals to fight against violence against elected officials. Among them, full psychological support, including for relatives because, explains Denis Thuriot, “we realize today, the pressures are not exerted only on the elected official. The family is often in the front line”.

In addition, the Renaissance party pleads so that the personal goods, the professional premises of an elected doctor, merchant, lawyers, can also come under the protection. Violette Spilleboute wants to go further. The member for the North believes that this protection should also be granted upstream, to candidates in any election. The challenge, according to her, is not to further accentuate the crisis of vocations. “People often tell us: ‘Really, politics is super interesting, but I’ll never do it. Given what you’re going through, I’ll never get involved'”, she says.

“There is a risk of disengagement and a risk of disintegration of our local democracy in particular.”

However, the Renaissance measures still need to be refined. The party gives itself six months, its bill will not be ready before the fall. On May 17, the Minister in charge of Territorial Communities Dominique Faure presented a plan to “stop this infernal spiral of violence against elected officials in our Republic”. Among other things, it plans to toughen criminal penalties, to create a “security pack” with more than 3,400 referents “attacks on elected officials” to take complaints, including at home.
