After the 2012 Olympic Games organized by the city of London, many inhabitants from disadvantaged areas were to benefit from specially built structures. However, the former Olympic village has become a residential area.

In ten years, the former Olympic Village in London (United Kingdom) has been transformed into a luxurious residential area. Since 2012, London says it has succeeded in making the Olympics a lasting success. But in this generally positive assessment, a promise made to the inhabitants of the time seems to have been forgotten: that of building affordable housing. A promoter has just offered 150 top-of-the-range apartments for rent. “We take care of furnishing everything, people can literally put their suitcases down”says Rick de Blaby, real estate agent.

50,000 people waiting for social housing

But the rent is alarming. It takes 3,200 euros per month for a 50m². However, when London showed up to host the 2012 Olympics, its promise was to rehabilitate its poor, industrial eastern suburbs. But ten years later, only 13,000 apartments have been delivered out of the 30,000 to 40,000 new homes promised. Less than 11% are accessible to low salaries. More than 50,000 people are waiting for social housing.
