Madame Butterfly, an opera by Puccini

It is in the universe of Japan, in the Land of the Rising Sun, that Giacomo Puccini drew inspiration to create an opera that is both tragic and imbued with extreme refinement and powerful charm.

Both an object of art and pure tragedy, Puccini’s work was very badly received at La Scala in Milan when it was premiered in May 1904. But, after a revision that allowed the composer to go even further musically, Madame Butterfly imposed itself triumphantly and has never since left the repertoire. Alongside Tosca, La Bohème and Turandot, this is one of Giacomo Puccini’s most performed works today. This score tinged with exoticism is nonetheless crossed by the breath of drama, that of a very young girl from Nagasaki who is married to a passing American sailor for whom this union is only fantasy. The heroine, CioCio-San, alias Butterfly, took this marriage very seriously to the point of denying the religion of her ancestors. Officer Pinkerton leaves, she will wait for his return, full of love and confidence, raising the son she had by him. When he finally returns, it is accompanied by his legitimate wife and decided to take his child to America. Butterfly has no other choice but death, and she commits suicide as her father had done a few years earlier… »©Angers Nantes Opéra
