Donestk and Lugansk follow the Russian example. The authorities of the two pro-Russian separatist territories in eastern Ukraine announced on Friday July 22 that they had blocked Google. According to a press release, the search engine “promotes terrorism and violence against all Russians, especially the people of Donbass”.

Like Russia, the pro-Russian separatist authorities in eastern Ukraine have been seeking to tighten their control of information since the war in Ukraine was launched in late February. Moscow has thus blocked the main social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

In Russia, new laws have also been adopted which impose heavy prison sentences on the publication of what the authorities consider to be “fake news” on the army or external military operations.
