Since early Friday morning, the police and the City of Montreal have been dismantling the camp that had been set up by pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Victoria Square.
The operation began around 5 a.m. When officers from the Montreal Police Department (SPVM) arrived, there were about fifteen people on the scene.
The SPVM and the City did not want to give further details on the operation while it is underway. However, it is emphasized that it is taking place calmly. A more complete report will be communicated when the dismantling is finished, we are told.
The camp in question had been established in Victoria Square since June 22. Activists from the collective Divest for Palestine demanded that the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec end its relations with Israeli institutions that they believe are complicit in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. The collective also asked Quebec to close its office in Israel.
Another pro-Palestinian encampment, established on the campus of McGill University, remains in place for now.
