Prince Edward Island reports 225 new cases of COVID-19

CHARLOTTETOWN – Prince Edward Island health authorities are reporting 225 new cases of COVID-19 in the province on Friday.

There are now 1,994 active cases on the island, which has recorded an average of 199 new cases a day over the past week.

In a statement, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Heather Morrison said the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations was unchanged from the previous day: eight patients, including one in intensive care.

There are now 14 preschools and daycare centers with COVID-19 cases, while the Atlantic Baptist long-term care facility has 16 confirmed cases.

As of Wednesday, 95.9% of islanders age 12 and older had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 92.6% had received two doses.

Officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated to help protect against the Omicron variant.
