(Amman) Prince Charles and his wife Camilla began a visit to Jordan on Tuesday, the first abroad since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, before traveling to Egypt on Thursday.
The heir to the British crown and Camilla were to be received at the royal palace by Abdullah II of Jordan and his wife Queen Rania at midday.
Prince Charles is also due to meet with representatives of humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Hashemite kingdom hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrians who fled the violence of the war in their country, border of Jordan.
The couple are due to conclude their visit on Thursday and travel to Egypt, the second stop on their tour in the region which focuses on the climate crisis, after the holding of the COP26 last week in Glasgow, and the dialogue of religions.
Egypt is due to host the COP27 climate conference at the end of 2022.
In Egypt, Charles and Camilla will meet with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and his wife Intissar, as well as Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the highest institution of Sunni Islam.
The eldest son of the Queen and heir to the throne, 72, has taken over for several years from Elizabeth II, 95, who is gradually retiring to protect her health, performing multiple official functions, in the United Kingdom and abroad .
Elizabeth II gave up, to his “great regret”, to participate Sunday in an official ceremony in London in homage to the victims of the wars, because of his state of health. She had to cancel her participation in several events in recent weeks on the advice of her doctors.
