Small consolation for the Prime Minister while his camp is in complete disarray. Gabriel Attal obtained 43.85% of the votes in the 10th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine, according to the final results of the first round of the legislative elections on Sunday June 30. The head of government is clearly ahead of Cécile Soubelet, the socialist candidate of the New Popular Front (35.53%). The LR-RN candidate, Sébastien Laye, is eliminated, with only 13%.

“Tonight is not an evening like any other”, commented the head of government from Matignon. The Prime Minister announced an objective – “prevent the National Rally from having an absolute majority in the second round” – and his desire to block the far right. “This will involve the withdrawal of our candidates whose retention in third position would have resulted in the election of a National Rally deputy over another candidate who, like us, defends the values of the Republic”did he declare.

2024 legislative results: “not a single vote should go to the National Rally”, demands Gabriel Attal

At the same time, the candidate of the presidential coalition in the 1st constituency of the Somme, Albane Branlant, announced that she was withdrawing in favor of François Ruffin, the candidate of the New Popular Front, who came in second place, even though she had achieved a score allowing her to stay in the second round.

Two years ago, Gabriel Attal, then a rising star of Macronie, had clearly won against Cécile Soubelet, who wore the colours of Nupes. He had obtained 48.06% in the first round against 30.75% for his opponent, before winning in the second round with 59.9% of the votes. The constituency is also one of the very few territories to have placed Valérie Hayer, the head of the majority list, in the lead in the European elections, with 21% of the votes.

Appointed on January 9 after a spectacular rise, the lease of the youngest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic risks ending on the evening of the second round, July 7, if the presidential camp does not manage to retain enough deputies and therefore loses its relative majority. That is two days before reaching the six months spent on rue de Varenne, which allows one to be elevated to the dignity of Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit. And without having, as tradition dictates, planted a tree in the garden of Matignon.

The Prime Minister, who had only been informed very late of the dissolution of the Assembly, had called on the French to “choose it” as head of government, emancipating himself with these words from the tutelage of the President of the Republic. A request which is unlikely to materialize, given the results at the polls.
