As Wagner’s troops advance towards Moscow on Saturday June 24, Yevgeny Prigojine, the head of the Russian militia “can’t afford a bloodbath, because he presents himself as a patriot”says on franceinfo Peer de Jong, vice-president of the Themiis institute, specialist in geopolitics and former colonel of the marine troops.

According to him, the objective of the boss of the paramilitary group “it’s that it’s going well, that the doors open and that he goes directly where he has to go”. “He can’t start a civil war”believes Peer de Jong.

Arrest Prigojine or intervene militarily

For the former colonel, the Russian power has two solutions if it wants to put an end to the rebellion of the Wagner group: arrest the leader to arrest the men or a military operation. Vladimir Putin seems to have chosen the second option since “Russian helicopters have already fired on the convoy a few hundred kilometers south of Moscow”says Peer de Jong.

“Putin has no intention of being dominated by Prigozhin at all”

“Will public opinion accept that he go up to Moscow? Which Russian military units are interested in joining this destabilization operation?”, asks Peer de Jong. Without public opinion and without “collision” with part of the army, the project of Evguéni Prigojine is doomed to failure, according to the former soldier.
