(London) What is arguably the most famous wet shirt in television history is up for sale. Water not included.
The white linen garment worn by Colin Firth in the role of Mr. Darcy for the television adaptation ofPride and Prejudicefrom the BBC, in 1995, will be auctioned on Tuesday.
Colin Firth’s costume – including boots, moleskin breeches and a velvet vest – is expected to fetch between 7,000 and 10,000 pounds (between 12,000 and 17,000 Canadian dollars) at a sale at Kerry Taylor Auctions.
The scene in which the brooding character Mr Darcy emerges from a pond, surprising his future love interest Elizabeth Bennet (Jennifer Ehle), was once voted as the UK’s most memorable television moment.
It was then reinvented in Bridgerton in a scene featuring British actor Jonathan Bailey. Colin Firth referenced his own performance with other romantic immersions in Love, Actually And Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.
Other items for sale include a 1950s Christian Dior taffeta ball gown worn by Madonna in the film Eva from 1996, the price of which is estimated between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds (69,000 to $104,000 CAN). There is also Johnny Depp’s costume in Sleepy Hollowwhich could bring in between 20,000 and 30,000 pounds (C$35,000 to $52,000).
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Bright Foundation, an arts education charity founded by Academy Award-winning costume designer John Bright. The items were donated by her costume house, Cosprop.
