Real estate prices are soaring in the Vosges. In Gérardmer, the prices of houses and apartments have exploded by 19% in one year, and by nearly 40% in five years. Some locals are forced to leave the city to find accommodation.
The lake and the Gérardmer massif (Vosges) make it the most expensive town in the department. In less than a decade, the small tourist resort has seen its postcard landscapes become increasingly busy. In five years, the price of real estate would have increased by 40%, reaching 3,500 euros per square meter on average, or as much as in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) or Lille (North).
A chalet of more than 250 square meters is thus sold for more than one million euros. And this is no exception. “The order book is full until next year. We’ve always had demand, but it’s true that it has strengthened over the past year”, comments Emilien Perrin, co-manager of the Decobois company. The Covid-19 epidemic has given French people a desire for the great outdoors, whetting the appetite of investors. Lorraine Roussat, real estate agent at WH Immobilier, reports “more of a foreign clientele”. As a result, locals are finding it increasingly difficult to buy in Gérardmer.
