Along the coasts, the municipalities note that the prices of the real estate are in clear increase. They are trying to curb real estate speculation.

Real estate prices are on the rise along the coastlines in France. As a result, many residents can no longer find housing. Seasonal rentals are on the increase, and property is becoming increasingly scarce. This can be explained in particular by the arrival of certain employees seeking to telework from very attractive coastal regions. In Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantique) on Saturday, November 20, some residents marched in the street to express their dissatisfaction.

In five years, real estate prices have increased by 16% in Normandy, 26% in New Aquitaine and 29% in Brittany. In La Manche, in Granville, the mayor (DVG) Gilles Ménard is trying to fight against real estate speculation. “There are investors today who buy entire lots of buildings to turn them into apartments exclusively for tourist rental. So the fact of imposing quotas would make it possible to regulate certain things“, he declares. Many municipalities would like to be recognized as a tense area in order to be able to regulate and limit short-term tourist rentals.
