More and more productions decide to shoot their films in Lithuania. They find many advantages there, in particular on the financial aspect.

When walking through the streets of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, it is possible to meet people dressed in 19th century fashion. And for good reason: they are actors who play in one of the many films shot in the city. The country has become an essential filming location. “I work a lot in Lithuania. (…) Over five years, things have exploded: we are working with increasingly large productions, with increasingly large budgets”, says Flore Vauvillé, costume designer.

In the country are shot historical films but also world famous series such as the new season of Stranger Things for example, which will be released on Netflix next year. Series Chernobyl put his cameras in an old nuclear power plant now being dismantled. These choices are made in particular for economic reasons. To rent a town hall for two days, a production pays less than 3,000 euros, an amount ten times less than a rental at the Louvre Museum. Historical decors, evoking 19th century Scandinavia or Russia or even the former Soviet Union, are readily available. Lithuania has also committed to finance a third of the film if it is shot in Vilnius and its surroundings. The Lithuanian capital has already hosted around fifteen shootings this year despite the Covid-19.
