The theme of medical deserts is addressed by almost all the 2022 presidential candidates. How to bring general practitioners back to rural areas? Report in Roanne, in the Loire.

Less than 60 days from the first round of the presidential election, the city of Roanne (Loire) suffers from a tenacious symptom: she lack of doctors. To realize this, an editorial team from 20 Heures is located in the heart of the city, in a market. She counts only 80 doctors, per 100,000 inhabitants.

To fight against the medical deserts, the proposals fuse in all the political parties. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm.A doctor cannot settle in an area already provided without replacing a doctor who has left“, said Yannick Jadot. For their part, the Republicans are rather brandishing the carrot, by offering an additional year of training against better remuneration. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s proposal makes debate, because he proposes that in exchange for a minimum wage during medical studies, doctors have the obligation to settle for 10 years in a so-called medical desert area.
