Donald Trump is back! On January 15, he won an important vote in the state of Iowa. What does this victory mean? We’ll sort it all out for you!
On November 5, 2024, the people of the United States will vote for the president who will govern the country for the next four years. The current president, Joe Biden, of the Democratic Party, wants to be re-elected. The opposing party, the Republican Party, must choose who will face it among six candidates. The best known is Donald Trump, who served as president from 2017 to 2021.
Elections… before the elections?
I asked Amélie Escobar, American politics columnist, to explain things to me. “Before everyone officially votes for president, there is a candidate selection process. Each state will vote on different dates. The first to vote is Iowa. »
These voting days are called caucuses or primaries. It was Donald Trump who emerged as the big winner in the Republican caucus in Iowa on Monday, with 51% of the vote.
Will Donald Trump win in every state?
For Amélie Escobar, there is no doubt: Donald Trump will once again become the candidate of the Republican Party.
“Donald Trump has too big a lead over the other candidates for that to be made up. On the other hand, Iowa is a very small state. Voters are more than 80% white. It doesn’t represent the whole country. It’s possible that Trump won’t win by as much margin in other states. »
Who are his main opponents?
Do the other Republican candidates still have a chance?
“If Trump’s lead continues in the coming weeks, the other candidates will surely abandon the race,” says Amélie Escobar.
Over the next few weeks there will be more votes. But Tuesday March 5 is THE date to watch. On that day, 16 states will vote for the Republican candidate of their choice. This day is called “Super Tuesday”. “It is on this date that we will have the true portrait of where Trump stands in the race for the nomination. »
