He gives up. Senegalese President Macky Sall announced on Monday July 3 that he would not be a candidate for a third term in the February 2024 presidential election. “Senegal goes beyond me and it is full of leaders capable of pushing the country towards emergence”he said during an address to the nation broadcast on public television, ending a suspense of several months.

The head of state maintained the vagueness on his candidacy, while the country experienced its deadliest unrest in years at the beginning of June, killing at least 16 people. His opponents lent him the intention of running for a third term. Elected in 2012, re-elected in 2019, Macky Sall had the Constitution revised in 2016. It stipulates that “no one may serve more than two consecutive terms”but he explained that this did not concern him since he had exercised his first mandate before the reform.
