Strong emotion in Burkina Faso. “The President of Faso decrees national mourning for 48 hours”, which began on Sunday December 26 at midnight, says a statement from government spokesperson Alkassoum Maïga. The move follows a new attack by suspected jihadists that hit the country this week, with the deaths of 41 civilians and army auxiliaries. This ambush by armed groups targeted civilians and Volunteers for Homeland Defense (VDP) in the You area in the north of the country.
“The search mission on the ambush zone (…) established an assessment of 41 bodies”, add text. Among the victims is Ladji Yoro, considered a leader of the VDP in Burkina Faso, he said.
“The identification of the victims is still ongoing”, underlines the government press release, which “firmly condemns this barbarity”.
