On the occasion of the 30th edition of Sidaction, the franceinfo teams went to meet Nathan Cornet-Ferrard and Otavio Albuquerque, both HIV-positive and victims of numerous prejudices.
Nathan Cornet-Ferrard, 21, carries HIV. The virus is undetectable in his body, and he can no longer transmit it. However, he sometimes hides his HIV status, because a lack of awareness persists around the disease. “We are imagined a bit like plague victims, people who can transmit it by kissing someone, by drinking a glass of water… It’s amazing”he says.
“An everyday fight”
At 28 years old, Otavio Albuquerque has spent half his life with HIV. By taking his tablets, the young Brazilian man can lead a normal life, but still has to face many prejudices. “An everyday fight”, said the young man, single. “If I want to meet someone in my life, if I say that I am detectable for HIV, I know that I am not going to see them again.”, he adds. While he dreams of working in the restaurant industry, his illness is a barrier to employment. In France each year, an average of 5,000 people discover their HIV status.
